In today's modern era, everyone is quite famous about modern PC games or Mobile games. Youngsters these days grind on the system to get their hands on the Game and possibly try to earn via games. Be it by video streaming or participating in some local / national Gaming tournaments. But do you know that way before in 1960's there were some video games which changed the face of the Gaming Industry. This was the period in history where Games started coming out and people got to know about them and would spend holidays playing them. Let us have a look at some of the historical as well as iconic games which revolutionized their Gaming industry.

Prior to beginning of our list of games here, I would like to recommend XAMK Course of Video Games from where I got insight to share this information with my fellow blog readers. Credit to them for listing out during teaching and in this article, I am going to share what I learnt.

So Lets begin

. . .

1. Spacewar

Spacewar is widely credited as being the first video game. It was developed in 1962 by Steve Russell, who was an engineer at MIT along with Martin Graetz and Wayne Wiitanen, who were the members of Tech Modern Railway club at MIT, with the assistance of Bob Saunders and Steve Piner. This game was developed on a computer called as DEC : PDP1 (Digital Equipment Corporation).

Objective of this game is simple. There are two space ships on the screen. They are meant to fight and destroy one another. There is gravity well designed in the middle, so we have to avoid it as our spaceship as well as our fired bullets will tend to wrap around it. Also if you fire a bullet at enemy ship and it misses the target and goes off screen from left side, it will again reappear from the right side of the screen.

This Game is surprisingly fun to play even after so many years. You can still play this game online on browser. To play this game, click here . The mechanics are easy so are the rules. Also we should be able to figure out the bullet trajectory in order to hit our opponent. Also as a 2 player game, it was social, thus adding more fun.

2. William's Arcade Classic : Defender

Defender was developed by Williams's Electronics, an American pinball cabinet creator and was released in 1981. Eugene Jarvis was the main engineer behind this game who was also a pinball machine designer. Initially it started as Space Game clone or Asteroid avoiding game type, but engineers thought to make the game more unique as well more fun to play around.

In this game, you play as a commander of ship, defending a planet from alien invasion. In the above image as you can see, on the left side, is our ship. The screen moves towards right side and we have to fire bullets and kill the appearing green aliens. You also have to save humans, so make sure don't kill humans. You need to pick up the kidnapped humans and make sure that they are not killed. You need to drop humans on land in order to save them.

The game also features risk reward mechanic, which rewards us after saving humans and killing certain aliens. To play this game click here

3. Pac-Man

Almost everyone today is familiar for everyone. Came out in 1980, developed by Toru Itawani of Japan, this game generated most revenue as any arcade game as compared to the other games in that period.

You play as pac-man, a yellow sphere whose objective is to munch all the dots scattered around the screen maze. The name of the 4 ghosts we need to avoid during devouring dots in maze are Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. To progress to the next level, you need to eat all dots in maze, avoiding the 4 ghosts of course.

In this game, strategic planning is more important as ghosts tend to adjust their path in order to corner the player. The player needs to plan re-plan route in order the survive. Also there are power dots in 4 corners on the maze, after eating them, we can eat ghosts and turn the tables. The ghosts will respawn after few seconds. To play this game online, click here.

4. Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog 2

This classic game was developed by Sega Technical Institute, a mix of American and Japanese style. When it was released in 1992, it instantly became second highest selling mega drive and it had spawned many sequels ever since that.

Sonic is blue hedgehog whose objective is to stop Dr. Robotnik. He is very fast and only thing that outsmarts Mario game is speed. The other things are very similar to classic Super Mario. Dr. Robotnik has captured some animals and turned them into cyborgs, which you have to beat in order to progress towards the antagonist. After defeating the antagonist, you release the animals, thus saving the day. The theme sounds not so interesting but the amazing levels and gameplay mechanics is what makes the games more interesting to play.

. . .

5. Doom

Released in 1993, it was one of the first FPS games. This game followed the story and idea of Wolfenstein 3D, whose franchise evolved after many years. It was created by John Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall.

So lets talk about the theme of the game. You play as nameless Doomguy, who fighting zombie soldiers. The 3D technology of Doom was so high at that time that it was very famous. Also it allowed people to create their own levels and upload them online. Also, this game introduced 'Deathmatch' which is very popular in many of the games released later. After this game, the craze of FPS was very huge that people started loving it.

. . .

6. Ridge Racer

Ridge racer is an arcade racing game developed by Namco. The game was released in 1993 and was ported to Play Station 1 Consoles in 1994.

The basic gameplay of Ridge Racer series is same throughout every installment. The objective is to race against 11 computer controlled opponents, and finish first place. The player begins at the last place, where we are expected to overtake them and compete against them via number of laps.

Each lap has a timer and with completion of each lap, the timer resets. If the timer reaches zero, the game is over regardless on which lap player is. This game popularized racing games among people. Later entries and sequels removed the timer concept and sole objective was to finish first.

7. Half Life

Half Life was created in 1998 by Valve Software published by Sierra. You play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist at Black Mesa whose objective is to escape the facility after an experiment goes terribly wrong.

The environment is highly interactive as NPCs too interacted with player at every point, whether we pay attention to them or  not. The main feature is player impact among the game. We can make decision to get involved in certain activity. Everything player does will affect the level as well as entire game outcome. Another feature which is most admirable is when player is low on health, it automatically makes enemies more liable to miss, so you always come out alive in tough situations.

I still possess the setup of this game and it is very fun to play too.

8. GTA 3

Everyone, literally everyone knows what GTA is. GTA 3 was the first 3D game among its franchise. It was released in 2001 by Rockstar Games.  It is the perfect fusion of theme into gameplay. Set in fictional Liberty City, adapted from New York City, Dark and gloomy atmosphere, an criminal who building his criminal empire, as well as seeking revenge from his former associates, completing tasks given by various characters who play very important part throughout the story.

It was originally supposed to be Need For Speed like game, but the police AI was set to be more intelligent and developers thought that it would change it to something more interesting, thus escaping from normal concepts. Thus how the mission system and story which makes GTA series willing to play was born.
